Foldable smartphones have been all the craze for the last couple of years. First introduced by Huawei and Samsung. Since then almost every other smartphone brand has followed suit with their own foldable phones. Naturally like every new technology, foldable phones are out of reach for the average consumer because of very high prices but that will change soon.
At MWC 2023 a new foldable smartphone, the Tecno Phantom V Fold was released by the Chinese smartphone company Tecno. You probably never heard of them but they are very popular in Africa. Up until now they mostly made budget smartphones but recently started to focus on other markets with high end flagship phones and now foldable phones.
Tecno will first launch in India followed by markets in the Middle East, Europe and Asia. The phone has a surprisingly premium design for its price if you compare it with the Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi foldables.
Tecno Phantom V Fold has a 7.85 inch 120Hz LTPO AMOLED display with 1B colours and 1100 nits peak brightness. The cover display is 6.42 inch 120Hz protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus. The inner display doesn’t have a deep crease like the z fold 4.
The phone will come equipped with last year’s Mediatek Dimensity 9000+ (4 nm) chipset. Though it’s not as powerful as the current Qualcomm’s best Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 but enough to handle any heavy processing. But being a Mediatek chip, it’s cheaper. That’s how they are able to make the phone more affordable. It will have HiOS 13 Fold on top of Android 13 out of the box. The device also has 256GB 12GB RAM, 512GB 12GB RAM Variants.
The phone will feature a large 5000mAh battery with 45W first wired charging. It will be available in black and white colours.
The price of the phone is INR 89,999 ($1,099). Though it’s not cheap compared to any regular flagship smartphones. But considerably affordable compared to other tablet sized foldable phones ( Samsung z fold 4: $1875)
