Apple will use self developed 5G modem on the iPhone 16
It has been rumoured for a long time that Apple is developing its own 5G modem chip. Apple is gearing up towards using their own 5G in 2024 on the iPhone 16 series. We previously had rumour that they will use self developed 5G in the iPhone 15 but that plan is now cancelled.
Apple’s in-house developed 5G modem is reportedly code-named “Ibiza”. This news comes from a very ice universe on weibo. He said Limited production of the modem will start in the second half of 2023 and it will be produced using TSMC’s 3nm process.
According to industry analysis it won’t be until 2024 that Apple’s start using its self-developed 5G. Apple currently uses Qualcomm’s 5G modem. It is currently unknown whether Apple would pay Qualcomm QTL licenses when they will use their own modems.
Ever since Apple acquired Intel’s modem business in 2019 everyone speculated that Apple would develope it’s own 5G modem at some point and it will be in 2024
